BEING WITH OTHER CYC MEMBERS IN LOVELY CANADIAN PLACES

On July 17th, we found ourselves at Buccaneer Bay for one overnight, knowing we would have a long haul to some northerly cove. On the next day, we arrived in Pender Harbour and found that Catherine and Eric Yusko on Renavatio and Bill and Deb Schmid on Anakena were there also. We all had a lovely happy hour together especially with Eric’s gin and tonics and Catherine’s great selection of hearty nibbles and super stories. It was fun!

A bit later Ralph de la O on Amnesty single-handedly sailed into the harbor, and so the four CYC boats were finally all together. Unfortunately, Ralph was tuckered out from his journey which began at the Sea of Cortez in Mexico several months ago. Because of his trip and that he did something Allen had been thinking about for a long time in a Bavaria 38 just like ours, Allen thought to invite him to join us and got into our dinghy to motor out to Amnesty. That’s when our 32-year old Honda two-horsepower outboard engine, which had served so well in the Bahamas (and was featured in past blog posts), gave up the ghost for the last time.

Since all four boats spent 2 nights in Pender Harbour (sic) (they have a great liquor store, IGA, & other services), Afterglow hosted everyone for appetizers and dinner. Ralph finally joined us with a kettle of cooked Dungeness crab---what a fabulous treat! Earlier this Saturday, he had set out his crab trap and caught them fresh, cooked and cleaned them and served them for us to gorge upon with glee. That crab made my homemade meatball, spaghettini, salad and green bean dinner very special. Deb’s home(boat)made chocolate chip cookies ended the meal and great conversations.

Plans were made. Bill and Deb were headed south, Catherine and Eric were headed north and will likely meet up with us again, and Allen and Norma and Ralph were headed 20 miles to Sturt Cove on Texada Island. Another CYC boat, SV Saorise is also in the area and we plan to meet up by next Saturday.

What a selection at the IGA. Canadians sure love their bacon!
